History of Somba Opu Fortress

The development of Somba Opu Fortress strated in 1525 when Gowa Kingdom was led by Tumapa'risi Kallona (1510-1546), the nineth king. This fortress was first built with clay. Became a capital of Gowa Kingdom. Inside the fortress was built a palace of king, patrician houses, houses of the officers, and trade center.

At that time, the area where Somba Opu Fortress stand (Makassar), was became one of the largest seaport city in Asia, which controled the trade in Asia and Pacific region. Great port of Makassar became an international hub by phinisi ships and boats from the Arab foreign trade, and China.

When Gowa Kingdom led by I Manriwagau Daeng Bonto Karaeng Lakiung Tunipalangga Ulaweng (1546-1565), the tenth king, the wall of Somba Opu Fortres was changed the appearance to bricks. The glue betwen bricks was not cement but egg white.Since that time, Somba Opu became a very strong fortress.

Meanwhile, in 1596 the Netherlands explorer under leadership of Cornelis de Houtman arrived in Port of Port, western Java. Six years later, the VOC (Verenigde Oost-Indische Compagnie) or the Netherland company on east India, was established. The company begun to trade to Sulawesi in 1607. In 1615, VOC ask trade monopoly. But the Sultan of Gowa rejected.

Makassar War happened from 1655 to 1669. At that time, Gowa Kingdom was led by Mallombassi Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Bonto Mangappe or Sultan Hasanuddin. The Netherland company compeled to monopoly the archipelago trading point. But Sultan Hasanuddin rejected the aggression than arouse fierce resistance.

Entering the midle of 1669, Gowa troops surrounded inside the wall and completely against from the fortress. Fortress can not be seized by the Dutch troops. Cannon ball that shoot by the Dutch was not able to brooke the walls. However, total isolation and blockade against the Somba Opu fortress eventually make the Gowa troops weak.

In Friday, June 24, 1669, thousands of people threatened by death inside the fortress. Sultan Hasanuddin forced to accept the surrender option by signing an agreement in Bungaya. It is an area in northern of the fortress. So that was called Bungaya Agreement. Contents of the agreement were emphasize the monopoly rights of the Netherlands company

After the agreement, all indigenous people were chased away from Makassar. Many peoples were also sentenced to death. Since that year, Gowa were entering to the colonialism era, followed the other areas in the archipelago which has first fallen under the Netherlands power.

After the defeat of Gowa, Netherlands troops destroyed Somba Opu. Ruins of the fortress was found by some archeologists in the 1980s. Walls buried in the soil. In general, condition of the fortress was worst. In 1990, the Indonesian government decided to excavate some parts of that walls.(*)

Short History of Fort Rotterdam

Rotterdam Fortress originally called Ujungpandang Fortress. Built in 1545 when Gowa Kingdom led by Tumapa'risi Kallona, the nineth king. Or a year before the renovation of Somba Opu Fortress. This fortress was built face toward Makassar Strait.

The development of Ujungpandang Fortress finished when Gowa led by Tunipalangga Ulaweng, the tenth king. In the same manner as Somba Opu Fortress, Ujungpandang Fortress is originally first built by clay. If Somba Opu function as the centre of kingdom, Ujungpandang fortress function as a military base.

In 1634, I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia or Sultan Alauddin, the 14th king, completed the building with stone wall. A year later, he added a gate in the front side of the fortress. So that the fortress built resemble a turtle. Makassar people called the building as panyua.

As a maritime country, which directly face toward sea, the King of Gowa aware the importance of defense systems. Ujungpandang Fortress is one of 17 fortresses that built along the coastline of Makassar. Some others, such as The Panakkukang Fortress, Anak Gowa Fortress, and the Barombong Fortress.

48 years after VOC jail the influence over Sulawesi, Makassar War was uproar between 1655 to 1669. Native resistance to the company that want to monopolize trading lines led by 16th king, I Mallombasi Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Bonto Mangappe or Sultan Hasanuddin.

Ujungpandang Fortress seized by VOC on Tuesday, November 18, 1667. Gowa troops who are still alive fleed and join at Somba Opu Fortress in the southern of Ujungpandang Fortress. Two years later, Sultan Hasanuddin and his people which survived in the Somba Opu Fortress was lost and sign the Bungaya Agreement.

After that defeat, 16 fortresses that built along the coastline were destroyed by Dutch army. Including Somba Opu Fortress. VOC leaving only one Fortress, that is Ujungpandang Fortress. Than, it was used as a base of their military defense. Leader of Dutch army, Admiral Cornelis Janszoon Speelman, changed the name of Ujungpandang Fortress to Fort Rotterdam.(*)

History of Gowa Kingdom

Gowa Kingdom stood at the beginning of 14th century, around the year 1300. The first king was a woman named Tumanurung (1320-1345). Since its establishment, the capital of Gowa Kingdom was located in Takabasia Hill then changed the name to Tamalate. In that place Tamalate Palace was built.

Tamalate become capital until the 8th king, I Pakere Tau Tunijallo Ri Pasukki (1460-1510). Than the 9th king, Daeng Matanre Karaeng Mangnguntungi or Tumapa'risi Kallona (1510-1546) built Somba Opu Fortress and moved the capital from Tamalate to the fortress.

But in 1667, The Somba Opu destroyed by the Netherlands following the defeat of Gowa troops under the leadership of King I Mallombassi Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Bonto Mangappe or Sultan Hasanuddin (1653-1669). Since that time, the Kingdom of Gowa lose.

Kings of Gowa afterwards does not have a good palace. Even the 29th King, Andi Makkulau, make his house as a palace. Many property of Gowa Kingdom lost. But some can be saved than stored in Makkulau's home.

Then in 1936, the Kingdom of Gowa build a palace any more in Sungguminasa. That was Balla Lompoa. This palace was built when the 31th king, I Mangngi-mangngi Daeng Matutu, was reign and was stayed until the King of Gowa XXXII, A Idjo Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Lalolang or Sultan Muhammad Kadir Aidir.

In 1945 the Republic of Indonesia established. The era of kingdom in the archipelago ended. All regions of Gowa Kingdom also officially gathered into the territory of Indonesia. No longer the King of Gowa after Sultan Muhammad Kadir Aidir. His son, Andi Kumala Idjo, is only a prince and never become king until now.(*)

Oldest Mosque in Southern Sulawesi

History of Katangka Mosque

Historians have not concurred yet on the development of Al-Hilal Mosque. Some of the historians thought, the mosque was built at 1603 or five years before Islam became the official religion of the Kingdom of Gowa. Other historians said the mosque was a work of 18th century.

However, there are not much historical records of this mosque. The stories about the development of mosque spoke from mouth to mouth, mainly by the preserver of the mosque who inherit it stories from a preservers before him.

If properly built in 1903, it should have a linkages with the spread of Islam in the region of Gowa Sultanate. The preserver said, the founder of the Mosque was Dato Abdul Makmur, a theologian from Minangkabau (west Sumatera). Dato Abdul Makmur was called Doto Ri Bandang or Daeng Bandang.

The mosque was established when Gowa Kingdom led by I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia, the 14th king. After he embraced Islam he was called Sultan Alauddin. He was the grandfather of Sultan Hasanuddin. Katangka is the name of a big tree that established before the mosque often used as a place to pray by Moslem merchant from Malay, Indian, and Arab.(*)

Cathedral Church of Makassar

History of Makassar Cathedral

When Sultan Hasanuddin be in command in the Sultanate of Gowa, the migration of foreign citizens from Malacca happened after a Portuguese fortress there collapsed. In 1658, Priest Fernendez Navarette arrived in Makassar. He was the first clergyman in the city. Fernandez being regarded as well by the officials and easy to perform his duty.

In June 1669, Gowa Sultan Hasanuddin and his army squeezed by Dutch troops in Somba Opu Fortress. Sultan Hasanuddin forced to accept the surrender option by signing the Bungaya Agreement. The contents of the agreement was stipulates the VOC (Dutch trade unions in east India) monopoly rights.

Because of the agreement, Fernandez experienced difficulties. Netherlands compelled Sultan Hasanuddin to expel foreign besides the Dutchmen. The Catholic is not free to run activities. Then in 1806, religious freedom can be felt in Makassar. At that time, the Netherlands was subjected by Napoleon Bonaparte.

In 1892, Priest A Asselbergs SJ lived in Makassar and rent a house in Heerenweg (now Sultan Hasanuddin Street) to be used as a place of worship. In 1895 he purchased a land in Komedistraat (now Kajaolalido Street). Six years later, Sultan Aidir Qadir, the 32nd Gowa King, allowed the development of the church at the location. That was Cathedral Church of Makassar.

On April 13, 1937, the area of South Sulawesi and Southeast became Apostolic Prefecture of Makassar by the Pope in Rome. Prefecture is to be trusted to the missionaries of Celebes Mission. Priest Mgr Martens became prefect. Than on May 13, 1948 the prefecture became Apostolic Vicariate of Makassar and January 3, 1961 become Archibishopric of Makassar.

In 1943, Makassar was bombarded by Allied Soldiers. Finally, some of the church part damaged. The philanthropist contribute assistance to improve by sending colored glasses windows that provide cathedral typical nuance.

History of Dato Ri Bandang

His original name was Abdul Makmur. He was a theologian from Minangkabau, comes precisely from Kota Tengah, Padang, West Sumatra, who arrived in Makassar in September 1605. His mission was to spread Islam religion in South Sulawesi.

Dato Ri Bandang come together with other two clergies from Minangkabau. They were Dato Sulaiman called Dato Patimang and Abdul Jawad called Dato Di Tiro. Based on the understanding of the kingdom area, this third dato spread. Dato Ri Bandang lived in Makassar. Meanwhile, Datu Patimang and Dato Di Tiro go to Bone and Luwu, the northern areas.

Only take two years for Dato Ri Bandang to interact in Makassar. In 1907, The Mangkubumi (high administrator) of Tallo, I Mallingkang Daeng Manyonri Karaeng Katangka, embraced Islam. Followed then by the 14th King of Gowa, I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia. Then he was called Sultan Alauddin.

On Friday, November 9, 1607, for the first time people of Tallo perform Friday pray, as well as a declaration that Islam has became the official religion of the Kingdom of Makassar (Gowa-Tallo). The mosque where the pray was held is still firmly standing. Until 1611 all of kingdoms in South Sulawesi embraced Islam.

There are three mosques associated with the presence of Dato Ri Bandang and also become historical witness of Islamization of Makassar. These are Tallo Mosque in District of Tallo, Makmur Mosque on Sulawesi Street, and Katangka Mosque on Syeh Yusuf Street.

HISTORY OF MAKASSAR CITY

Before 1460, the region now called Tallo was part of the Kingdom of Gowa region. At the time of 6th Gowa King, Tunatangka Lopi (1445-1460), the kingdom is divided into two, namely Gowa Kingdom and Tallo Kingdom. The separation occurred because Tunatangka Lopi have two children who want to have the same power.

After Tunatangka Lopi died, Tuniawanga Ri Paralekkanna continue his father's throne as King of Gowa. Meanwhile, his brother, Karaeng Loe Ri holdings, became the first king of Tallo. During almost a century, the two kingdoms is running its own.

When 9th Gowa King Daeng Matanre Karaeng Mangnguntungi or Tumapa'risi Kallona (1510-1546) was reign, these two kingdoms are united together again. Tallo region back into the Kingdom of Gowa. The capital of Gowa Kingdom was in Somba Opu Fortress.

However, King Tallo retained the power over their own region as Mangkubumi (administrator). Constitution of Gowa formed in such a way so as not eliminate the power of Tallo King. Since that time, people often mentioned Gowa and Tallo together as the Kingdom of Makassar.

Tallo role as a major seaport city of the kingdom of Gowa. Become a trading hub over Asia-Pacific regions together with Sunda Kelapa seaport in western Java. It happened before eventually subjected by VOC. The Dutch company successfully monopolized trading point in the archipelago.

At the end of 16th century, Islam religion was entering to Sulawesi. Tallo Mangkubumi, I Mallingkang Daeng Manyonri Karaeng Katangka, was the first person embraced Islam. This step was followed by the 14th King of Gowa, I Mangngarangi Daeng Manrabia. Furthermore, the Kingdom of Gowa take the form of a sultanate and provided a degree to the king as Sultan Alauddin. He was the grandfather of Sultan Hasanuddin.

On Friday, 9 November 1607, Tallo Mangkubumi held a Friday pray in Tallo Mosque. Islam has became the official religion of the Kingdom of Makassar (Gowa-Tallo). Where the mosque was the first Friday pray was held at this time still firmly stand. Of course, with several renovations.

The historians in the South Sulawesi agreed, November 9, 1607 is the anniversary of Makassar. Meanwhile, the body of Tallo King and Mangkubumi buried in a complex, not far from the mosque where the first pray was held on Friday.(*)

HISTORY OF SULTAN HASANUDDIN

Sultan Hasanuddin (1631-1670) is the 16th King of Gowa. He experienced a bitter time in the history of the Kingdom of Gowa to be subdued because of the Dutch monopoly trade in the interests of VOC. However, because of his courage, Sultan Hasanuddin called de haantjes van het oosten (rooster from the east).

He was born on January 11, 1631 in the kingdom sphere. His inborn name was I Mallombasi Muhammad Bakir Daeng Mattawang Karaeng Bonto Mangeppe. He replaced his father, Sultan Malikussaid, as King of Gowa in the age of 18 years old and called Sultan Hasanuddin.

When Sultan Hasanuddin reign, VOC are conquering kingdoms in Indonesia archipelago. Gowa had big port controled trading routes. Netherlands combines the strength of small kingdoms to subdue Gowa. Take advantage of rivalry among kingdoms, including among Gowa and Bone Kingdom in northern peninsula.

Makassar war uproar in 1655 until 1669. The city is difficult to be penetrated from the sea as protected by the 17 fortress. But entering the mid-year of 1669, the Gowa army squeezed. Attacked from sea by the Dutch troops under the command of Cornelis Speelman and attacked by Bone troops led by Aru Palaka from land.

Sultan Hasanuddin against from Somba Opu Fortress. Because of the total isolation towards the fortress, thousands of people threatened to die. He was also forced to accept the option of Bungaya Agreement signed on November 18, 1667. From 29 articles, all emphasized the only VOC monopoly.

In 1669, Sultan Hasanuddin resigned and submitted the throne to his son, I Mappasomba Daeng Nguraga Tumenanga Ri Allu called Sultan Amir Hamzah. Then he made war together with his people, fight against the Netherlands with the slogan, "Die is better than colonize by other people.”

Sultan Hasanuddin died on June 12, 1670 after suffering placenta. His body in Tinggimae Hill located on the former Palace of Tamalate, the first capital of Gowa Kingdom.(*)

SHORT HISTORY OF SYEH YUSUF

Syeh Yusuf was born in Tallo (Makassar) on July 13, 1626 (Syawal 8, 1036 on Arabic calendar). His nickname was Muhammad Yusuf. His mother was Aminah, daughter of Gallarang, Moncongloe, Gowa Kingdom. While who his father, historians still controverting until now.

When he born, Islam has become the official religion in Sultanate of Gowa. Aminah came from a rabble Family. Little Yusuf’s live picked up when his mother married with Sultan Alauddin, 14th King of Gowa. He was getting religious education until adult and become a persistent proponent of Islam.

Yusuf was a smart teenager. Therefore, he became a teacher and had a lot of students. He was also an anti colonialism idealist. At that time, VOC (Verenidge Oost-Indische Compagnie) or the Dutch company in east India are monopolize the trading strips in the archipelago, including in Gowa. His voice was shrill against the Dutch.

When he was 18 years old he gone to pilgrimage. From Mecca, he was laying over in Banten (Western Java). He repeated his visit in 1672 and decided to fight with Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa, King of Banten, after his country shattered because of war against the VOC.

Syeh Yusuf still fighting even when Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa had been disabled. On December 14, 1683 he was then arrested in Sukapura, Tasikmalaya, West Java, and exiled to Batavia. September 1684, he was exiled again to Sri Lanka. Syeh Yusuf not cured, he still fighting against the Dutch in Sri Lanka. July 1993, with 49 followers he was removed along to South Africa.

Although far away from the land of birth, his activities still continue. He continued to teach Islam religion there. During six years in South Africa, he spent the rest of his life to teach about justice and peace. Together local people fight against colonialism.

Syeh Yusuf died on May 23, 1699 whwn he was 73 years old. Sultan Gowa and Sultan of Banten scrambled asked the Dutch to bury his body. On April 5, 1704, the chest bringing Syeh Yusuf’s bones arrived in Makassar and immediately buried in Lakiung, Gowa. But is it true Syeh Yusus who lie? Syeh Yusuf’s tombs also contained in Banten, Madura, Sri Lanka, and Cape Town. God Omniscient.

History of Prince Diponegoro

Prince Diponegoro born in November 11, 1785 in Central Java. He is the son of Sultan Hamengkubuwono III. When the prince was born and became adult, all areas in the archipelago has been governed by Dutch.

In May 1825, the Government of East India intended to make the road from Yogyakarta to Magelang (Central Java). Construction of road passed through Tegalrejo, the village where the Diponegoro lived. In one sector, the road violated the Diponegoro’s ancestral tombs complex. Prince was angry and ordered his followers to revoke stilts

Dipenogoro was considered rebellion by Dutch. On July 20,1825, the Dutch troops besiege his village. Prince and followers fled and hide to Selarong Cave, at Bantul and Kulonprogo border. While the Netherlands does not successfully perceives, they burned out the villages.

From the cave, Prince Diponegoro preparing troops. Furthermore, during the five-year they fight against the Dutch. Diponegoro war also called Java War (1825 1830), the largest ever occurred throughout the colonial Dutch in the archipelago. 15 from 19 princes in Yogyakarta joined the Diponegoro troops.

Open battle often held sardonically. Battle front occurred in dozens of cities and villages throughout Java. Once sardonic this war, when Dutch army can take control of a region in the afternoon, Diponegoro troops grab back in the evening. Logistics point was built, magazine continue produced.

At the peak of hostilities, the Dutch mobilize 23,000 soldiers. In 1827, the Dutch attacked with blockade strategy. Two years later, Kyai Maja, the spiritual leader of Diponegoro troops arrested. Followed by the arrest of Prince Mangkubumi and Commander Sentot Alibasyah surrender.

On March 28, 1830, troops under the command of General De Kock successfully pinched Diponegoro troops in Magelang. There, Diponegoro stated that he would surrender by terms. He asked the Dutch released his troops left. He was arrested and exiled to Manado, then transferred to Makassar.

Since that time, Java, war was declared ended. This big war killed 8,000 Dutch soldiers, 7,000 Diponegoro soldiers, and 200,000 residents of Java died. After the war over, half of the population of Yogyakarta was wiped.

Prince Diponegoro died in Rotterdam Fortress when he was 70 years old. Precisely on January 8, 1855. His body was buried ini Kampung Jerra which is now became Melayu Village in Wajo District, Makassar City. There also buried pursuer and their children.(*)

Monument for 40,000 Victims

HISTORY OF THE SLAUGHTER

When leaders of the independence of Indonesia negotiate with the Dutch delegations in Linggarjati (1946), resistance of people continued to uproar outside Java. Including in South Sulawesi. Shooting and attacks almost happened every night against defense posts of the Dutch army.

On November 9, 1946, the headquarters of Dutch army called KNIL in Batavia (Jakarta) decided to send special troops from the Depot Speciale Troepen (DST) in counter insurgency operations (crushing rebellion). Troops led by Captain Raymond Westerling, a Turkey bloody Dutch officer. They arrived in Makassar on December 5, 1946.

Special operations troops first action began on the evening in December 11, 1946. Its objectives are Batua village and several small villages in the east of Makassar. The area was surrounded, houses were combed, and all the people forced to came together in an open space. Nine people who attempted to flee immediately shot dead.

Westerling directly speak to the people, translated into Bugis and Makassar language. He gave a list to the head of the village consist of insurgent names. They were forced to identify the people who are in the list. In Batua, 35 peoples are accused as insurgents directly executed in place.

With the same pattern, frisk continued. In area of Tanjung Bunga, 81 people died in the night operation on December 12. In Kalukuang Village, 23 people shot dead in the operation on December 14. In Jongaya Villege, 33 people executed in the place of operation on December 16.

After they swept in Makassar, they resumed operations in areas outside of Makassar. Polombangkeng, Takalar Regency, attacked by special teams. 330 people were killed there. On December 26, Westerling forces began attacking Gowa Regency. 257 people were shot. They continued to search insurgents to Barru Regency, Parepare City, Pinrang Regency, Sidrap Regency, and Enrekang Regency.

Most terrible slaughter occurred in Galung Lombok, Barru Regency, on February 2, 1947. Some of Indonesian's Independence Movement was fallen down under bayonet, than they was shot dead. Following the peoples who gathered in the field exterminated with automatic rifle. No official report on the number of victims. But the Government of the Republic of Indonesia (RI) said thousands of people died in this place.

Special forces are drawn to Batavia in March 1947. Westerling greeted as a hero. Dutch military media mentions the year as a shining victory of the rebellion. "The Turkish Came Back," so they called.

In the same year, the Indonesian delegation speaking before the UN Security Council. Victims of the slaughter reported reached 40,000 people. But the Dutch government denied. According to them, only 3,000 people were killed. Westerling admitted he had only killed 600 peoples.(*)

HISTORY OF TRIKORA OPERATION

Mandala was the name of the troops led by Major General Soeharto in a operation called Trikora Operation. This was a confrontation against the Dutch in Papua. The Government of Indonesia call Operation of West Irian Liberation.

After independent from Dutch colonial in 1945, the founder of the Indonesian stated that West Papua (East Papua is Papua New Guinea) is part of Indonesia. However, the large island is still under dominance of the Netherlands and prepared to be sovereign country in 1974.

Sukarno (the first president) stated that the sovereign country of West Papua was a Netherlands strategy (or western countries) to continue to drive imperialism after total failure of colonialism in archipelago. State of West Papua is considered as a puppet country and would be shaded an independence of Indonesia.

On December 19, 1961, President Sukarno announced the implementation of Trikora Operation. The aim was to baffle establishment of West Papua State and integrate it into Indonesia. Sukarno established Mandala Command led by Soeharto. This command duty was to execute armed confrontation against the Netherlands.

Makassar is selected by Soeharto as a base of his troops. A confrontation passed off two years. In 1963, after some fierce battles, Indonesia and the Netherlands made negotiations in New York. Insistence on the United States, the Netherlands recognizes that West Papua is part of Indonesia.(*)

The entire cultural identity is now mushrooming in Makassar. Mixed with the tribes from other regions in Indonesia, such as Minahasa, Java, Bali, Malay, Ambon, and Chinese. Creating a colorful cultural diversity.

Throughout the year, many events have always be held in Makassar. From modern art festival, such as jazz and popular music, theater, up to a local cultural festival that show attractive arts.

Infrastructure
Makassar is the major port city in eastern Indonesia. Goods and passengers connecting to other major cities in Indonesia and the world. In the holiday seasons, the foreign tourists came with the cruise ships.
